Shop local! Since its inception in 1995, supporting and celebrating local quilt shop owners has been the driving force behind Quilt Sampler® magazine. This issue reinforces that purpose. Our team scoured the nominations, selected 10 shops to feature, and then visited each shop. And as I discovered more about the owners and employees, I was reminded that they, in turn, enrich their communities through education, inspiration, and charitable efforts. To use the 2 Peaks in 1 Triangle Ruler from Creative Grids to cut A and B pieces, complete the following steps. For A and A reversed triangles, cut two 3×42" strips from cream speckle print. Layer the strips with wrong sides together, aligning all edges. The historic downtown is a 1920s oil boom district of architecturally relevant buildings, galleries, and boutiques. On the east side of town, the city honors its prairie past with the Pioneer Woman Museum, where a 17-foot-tall sculpture honors generations of resourceful female pioneers. location: Centennial, Colorado established: 1996 size: 4,100 square feet About 20 miles south of downtown Denver is Holly’s Quilt Cabin, a consolidation of three shops’ worth of quilting treasures. What began in 1996 as a shop called The Quilt Cabin eventually sprouted two additional metro-area locations, Quilts in the Attic and Quilting Up a Storm. By 2006, owner and entrepreneur Holly Engelken had consolidated the three shops into Holly’s Quilt Cabin, a one-stop shop. “Because of the long, narrow footprint of the building, it takes me about 30 seconds to walk from the front to the back of the store,” says Kari Nichols, shop manager and quilt designer. Beyond the corner Denhart Bank building, which anchors a row of shops, Peddler’s Way Quilt Co. continues the look with a vintage sign calling out the shop’s “quilt supplies” and “fabrics & novelties.” While visitors visit Washington for the small-town charm, many are wowed by the spacious shop created by owners Linda Calvert, Debbie Myers, and Gail Warning. location: Portland, Oregon established: 2010 size: 3,000 square feet On a busy street corner in Portland, Oregon, sits Modern Domestic, a quilt shop with soaring ceilings and concrete floors warmed by light flowing through plate glass windows, exposed beams of old-growth Douglas fir, and bolts and bolts of color. “It’s modern but cozy,” says Michelle Healy, who co-owns the shop with Lupine Swanson. “We want people who walk in to feel as if they’re coming home.” That “home” is located in the bustling Alberta neighborhood where arts, culture, and food flourish.
