IN THE SUMMER of 2013, a four-year-old beagle with a blue tattoo in his left ear dropped into my home as if from another planet. IN 2001, Eugene and Jenny Vanderpol noticed that the 20 eucalyptus trees on their neighbors’ Carlsbad, California, property had grown tall enough to block their view of the Pacific Ocean.
