When the 310 GTS/GTV was unveiled at the 2024 EICMA motorcycle show in Milan, it confirmed the worst-kept secret of modern scootering: Vespa was going large. With its 310cc HPE power unit, this iteration of the GTS family has become the largest capacity, most powerful Vespa ever to leave the factory at Pontedera. Understandably, owners of previous machines are keen to understand what benefits this brings in the real world and whether they should trade up. We all admire the stunning beauty of vintage scooter design, and none more so than that of the Vespa from the 1950s. That style is what makes them so iconic and why they are admired so much. Finding one that is unrestored and with good original paintwork is hard to come by these days, and the big question is, do you touch it up in any way? And the answer is always ‘no’, because no one wants to destroy a machine’s heritage. Known for its friendly, approachable atmosphere and impeccable organisation, the event saw scooterists flock to The Camp in Ramsey for the rally. Tickets went on sale at Easter this year and sold out rapidly, a clear testament to its reputation. Travelling long distances to the event from within the UK, were the A9 Highlands S.C. from Inverness and the Mad Monks from Motherwell. Riders and enthusiasts from across the region gathered to celebrate classic two-wheelers, taking full advantage of the soaring temperatures and lively atmosphere. I vividly remember buying my first GTS and the feeling that somehow I was cheating on my two-stroke heritage. It was my first season working for the magazine, and my trusty P2 was showing the strain of hurtling around the country to attend rallies and visit trade contacts. The honest truth is that I prefer to ride, it’s less expensive than driving a car and given the state of our road network, usually faster than getting stuck in congestion. The ride across to Woolacombe on Friday was undertaken in rather pleasant temperatures, ranging from the low to mid-20s, and also included a breakfast stop at Amesbury and a visit to the nearby site of Stonehenge. Literature relating to the Lambretta is plentiful these days, but when it comes to the more specialised history of the Serveta, one name always crops up. The reason is that the author of several publications dedicated to Spanish Lambretta history has an enthusiastic nature like no other. Firm favourites on the scooter rally circuit, Sarah Collins and her band Keep The Faith, are back on the road after a long lay-off and looking forward to playing gigs around the country again. Their comeback appearance was at the Feva Festival in Knaresborough in August, Sarah said: “It’s such a buzz to be performing in front of audiences again. There’s something about the sound of two-stroke engines that stirs the blood, and Lucy Smith from Scunthorpe was brought up around that. “My dad, Gordon, was part of the original scooter scene in Scunthorpe, which was before the Scunthorpe Pathfinders S.C. was founded and during the late ’60s and ’70s, he’d ride up to Scarborough every weekend with the rest of the Scunny lads”, explained Lucy.
