BORN: September 28, 1945, Tokyo, Japan
AS FAR AS TERRORIST MASTERMINDS GO, THEY DON’T COME MUCH MORE UNLIKELY THAN FUSAKO SHIGENOBU, FOUNDER AND LEADER OF THE ONCE-NOTORIOUS JAPANESE RED ARMY (JRA).
Dubbed the Mistress of Mayhem, the Red Queen and the Black Widow, hers was a reign of bloody (and confounding) terror stretching continents and decades. Mixing firebrand politics with sultry good looks, Shigenobu became the poster child of ultra-leftist politics: revered by some, reviled by more. Under her guidance, the JRA became one of the most feared terrorist organisations of the 1970s, hijacking planes, taking hostages and committing massacres in their pursuit of a global socialist uprising. It never quite worked out that way, but Shigenobu was a woman determined to leave her mark on history.
