THE FIRST CZAR OF RUSSIA HAD A NICKNAME: IVAN GROZNY. There’s a bit of disagreement about the exact English translation; some believe it was a term of endearment, meaning ‘Ivan the Formidable’ or ‘Ivan the Awesome’. The majority of historians, however, aren’t so flattering. They prefer ‘Ivan the Terrible’, and if you look at some of the utterly abominable stuff the man did during his rule, it’s not hard to see why.
A lot of Ivan Vasilyevich’s cruel behaviour can probably be attributed to his unusual childhood. When he was three, his father, the Grand Prince of Moscow, died, and the little boy was named as his successor. Ivan was apparently quite a brainy little guy, but not smart…
