In September 2020, Ansonia Records suddenly re-emerged from the past. From 1949, when it was founded by Ralph Perez, the label was at the forefront of New York’s Latin music scene, with a roster of artists from the Dominican Republic, Cuba and Puerto Rico connecting New York’s fast-growing Latin migrant population with the music they had left behind. Even after Perez’s death in 1969, the label remained in family hands, championing Latin music into the 80s, with albums by Ismael Rivera, Celia Cruz and La Sonora Matancera in a catalogue that veered between popular boleros, merengues and more folkloric material.
