The FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019™ will take place in nine cities throughout France from June 7 through July 7, including Paris, Lyon and Nice. As the official automotive partner of FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019™, Hyundai Motor will partner with the FIFA World Football Museum to present a special exhibition on the history of women’s football in Paris, ‘The Women’s Game’. The exhibition hall displays many photographs capturing scenes from the industrial facilities, such as the factory interior with the eye-catching steel-frame structure, big cranes in the harbour, colourful barrels, and a row of machine equipment. This is ‘Industry Busan’ by Jo Choonman, a photography exhibition revealing the full scenery of the industrial facility in Busan held at the GoEun Museum of Photography. The 2019 auri Research Report Brief was held at the Seoul Hall of Urbanism & Architecture on May 23. Auri addressed five key research areas: public architecture, urban regeneration, pedestrian environments, crime prevention, and the hanok. Youm Chirlho (research fellow, auri) first presented a paper on how ‘public architecture is changing community life’. He showed how research had been conducted on ‘improving public architecture procedure, establishing an architecture policy base plan, and developing design competition guidelines through enacting a promotions act on the architecture service industry’, and that efforts continue regarding planning for various projects, research, and institutional improvements to motivate a better future for public architecture. This year, 2019, the Korean Society commemorates the centennial of the Korean provisional government and the March 1st Movement in 1919. As historical accounts resurface in the name of the centenary, I can sense how present this history continues to be. Over the past few years, the architectural world has held a series of events in celebration of this centennial of Modernist architecture: Adolf Loos’ Steiner House – considered the starting point of Modernism – was completed in 1910, De Stijl was founded in 1917, and Bauhaus was established in 1919. As such, an opportunity to review the Modernism movement has occurred. The exhibition of work by Migiliore+ Servetto Architects (M+S Architects), who are based in Milan and have performed various architecture projects across the world, will be on show from May 22 to June 29 at Onground Gallery. The exhibition’s name ‘Lightmorphing’ is a combination of the words ‘light’ and ‘morphing’, represent years of research by M+S Architects. Lightmorphing refers to a series of processes by breathing life into dynamic installments as they interact with light and as light is intertwined and amplified through space. On June 12, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced that it has selected ArchiWorkshop (Park Su-Jeong, Sim Hee-Jun), IDR Architects (Jun Borim, Lee Seunghwan), FHHH Friends (Yoon Hanjin, Han Seungjae, Han Yangkyu) as the winners of the 2019 Young Architects Award. The exhibition ‘Playful Neighbourhood : PLAYNET’, organised by Kyobo Book Centre, C Program and the Soda Museum, will run through July 14 at Kyobo Art Space in Gwanghwamun. The word ‘Nolseogwon (Playful Neighbourhood)’ refers to a neighbourhood where children can play. The exhibition, which began with the question, ‘Is our neighbourhood a good place for children to play?’, features an amusement environment that helps sound out growth for the next generation. This essay considers the Bauhaus as a product of the dynamism of postwar German society in the 1920s, rather than of a few heroic figures. Instead of focusing on how the Bauhaus arrived on the Korean Peninsula or analysing the stylistic similarities between buildings, it will investigate how the Bauhaus’ architectural ideals were reproduced in a similar manner in two Koreas during the Cold War under the influence of the United States and the Soviet Union. This article will recount the stories of the Bauhaus as significant precedents instead of focusing on the dominant origin tale. A School Within Local Society A school has always been perceived as a space dedicated to educational activities for the benefit of students. However, the recent phenomenon of a declining number of students has necessitated a more creative approach to the improvement of the current educational infrastructure. With regards to this, the school educational infrastructure is currently looking for ways it can transform various educational spaces into spaces for the benefit of the region. The eastern building of Banghak Middle School was the result of a design competition project, raised to remodel the leisure space of an educational facility and change it into a cultural and recreational space for students and local residents. The first solo exhibition ‘Dropping to the Surface’ of Kim Kyoungtae, who has built his own world of photography through the placid and homogeneous images of planes, opened at the exhibition hall Whistle from May 17 to June 22. Kim, who has been converting three-dimensional objects into two-dimensional planes via the focus stacking method, chose cubes as the subject for this exhibition. This scale cube, which is 1cm-long on all sides, is also an object that was used as the standard unit for measuring the size and direction of asteroids at NASA. The Gwangju Design Biennale 2019 will be held in Gwangju, in spaces such as Gwangju Design Center and the Asia Culture Center from Sep. 7 to Oct. 31. A special exhibition to hail the centenary of the Bauhaus will take place in the second exhibition hall. Marking the 8th Biennale, this year’s theme is ‘HUMANITY (human+community) with the purpose of ‘exploring the role of design as creating common values for humanity and a tool of innovation’ by expanding perspectives between individuals and the community. Songwol-dong was once a village that lay beneath the city walls outside Donuimun Gate, housing the poorer classes of the Joseon Dynasty. During Japanese colonial rule, as a result of urbanization and the installation of the streetcar, even foreigners had begun to move into this neighbourhood. Vestigial marks of this period are noticeable in its architecture: the urban hanok, the red brick houses, and the Culture Houses (a Japanese-Western eclectic architecture). In the period following the 1950s, two storey high multiple unit houses were funded and built by the international aid from the United States. The history of residential architectural styles in modern and contemporary Seoul can be traced throughout the valley developments outside of the city walls. Deep in Dongpyeon village, where Gwacheon and Anyang meet, the project site can be found, surrounded by parkland and green spaces at the foot of Mt. Gwanak. How might one try to harness the best aspects of the surrounding environment and draw them into a building? This was the starting point of the project. At the end of an approach to Dongpyeong-ro, the site forms the target in a line of sight. Although the regulations allow for a floor area ratio of up to 300%, the client requested 200% with a maximum height of ten floors. This provided room for manoeuvre between various spatial devices planned throughout the mass of the building. Yang Seungjin creates chairs and lighting designs by blowing balloons. His ‘Blowing Series’ has a unique charm, amassing the characteristically rounded shape of balloons, the visual tension produced by balloons’ fragility, and the strength of the multilayered epoxy. He has participated in various other projects involving custom-made furniture, furniture for exhibitions, and cooperative work with brands, and continues to establish his own style. When I visited his workroom for this interview, I noticed the squashy, vibrantly coloured balloons that hung from the ceiling, resembling a delicatessen displaying their sausages.
