The Seo-Seoul Museum of Art is a new branch of the Seoul Museum of Art, and construction is planned in Geumnarae Central Park. It will function as a hub for the South West region of Seoul where cultural and educational facilities are relatively insufficient, providing a convergence between art and science in education for the younger generation and public exhibition programmes. Camp Long, Gangwon-do, which was returned from US force in December 2019, was originally planned for redevelopment as a culture and sports park. Hyunjoon Yoo (professor, Hongik University) emphasises the significance of the ‘in-between space’ and the ‘communication between the interior and exterior’. By contradicting the supposed division between the exterior and interior, Yoo pursues a boundary that is flexible and ambiguous. This is to establish a margin between the city and architecture, and each will permeate the other. The Quay Brothers, who are renowned for stop-motion animations that use puppets, have turned their attention to exposing the dark underbelly of industrial society. Their newest exhibition, ‘Quay Brothers: Welcome to the Dormitorium’ will be on show at the Seoul Arts Center’s Hangaram Art Museum, as a follow-up to their special exhibition hosted by the 21st Jeonju International Film Festival. For this exhibition, Stephen Quay and Timothy Quay are presenting an impressive variety of works which amount to some 100 set models, puppets and illustrations. There has been a series of announcements related to the multiple winning projects for municipal welfare centres for citizens by local governments. On May 26, Yeoncheon-gun unveiled the winning project for the multi-purpose welfare centre to be built at 225-1 of Chatan-ri, Yeoncheon-eup. The new multi-purpose welfare centre was designed to integrate a children’s welfare centre and Veterans Hall into one building. The building is a one-story basement floor with three floors above ground, and with a total floor area of 2,314.19m2 . The winning project was a design proposal submitted by fig.architects (principal, Lee Juhan). It features a cantilever truss structure at the entrance and exit of the building, and a courtyard wide in its north-south direction. In-between Space Created by Substantial Rainfall Due to seasonal winds, the eastern area of the Eurasian continent experiences frequent heavy rainfall and a significant level of precipitation throughout the year. In contrast, the west receives less than 1,000mm of rain per year. This disparity in rainfall prompted different architectural methods and approaches between the two areas. Since the first Mesopotamian civilisation, western civilisations chose to build buildings by constructing walls, whereas eastern civilisations faced difficulties when employing heavy walls in construction as the terrain would become soft and unstable during the rainy season. This eventually led to those in the east to select lightweight materials such as wood in construction. On July 24, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced the winners of the 2020 Young Architects Award: B.U.S Architecture (co-principals, Woo Seungjin, Park Jihyun, Cho Seonghak), On Architects (principal, Jung Woongsik), and JIYO Architects (principal, Kim Sejin). Dongsimwon Landscape Design & Construction Co.’s ‘Wonderful Land’ (principal, Ahn Gyedong) was awarded the first prize in the Competition for the Natural Swimming Pool at Jamsil Hangang Park. The Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to renovate the swimming pool facilities in Jamsil Han River Park, originally built in 1990, to create a waterpark that can be used in all seasons, and to restore the Han River and surrounding natural landscape with due consideration of local ecology and urban regeneration. In the Seorisan Mountain in Gapyeong, where chestnut trees are dense, the Glam Tree Resort opened in March of this year. Constructed on a slope, it has been built according to a membrane structure, housing 18 glamping pavilions and a welcome centre which takes up a 12,844m2 . This is the fourth Glamping Pavilion Project designed by ArchiWorkshop who are the pioneers in domestic glamping architecture. He analyses architecture and cities from a keen and creative perspective, connecting this analysis to wider social problems and presenting architectural and urban solutions to these problems. Of the many propositions raised in his books, his most well-known is the critical statement that ‘school is a prison’.
