There was a nervous tension around Karori Park in Wellington as women from Iran, Syria, Colombia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Eritrea, Somalia, Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Myanmar, China and Rwanda gathered on International Women’s Day. I heard one say, “if I could ride a bike today, I would be so happy.” I think that every day, but for her this was different. In the group of thirty refugee women, only ten had ever been on a bike. Where these women are from, riding bikes isn’t something that females do—it’s either frowned upon or banned outright. But that day they had a chance to ride, and ride they did.
