EMPLOYMENT Access to Work grants are being quietly slashed, leaving disabled people in fear for their jobs → Last year, Labour pledged to “get Britain working” – helping disabled people to find and stay in employment. “We will make sure everyone… can benefit from the dignity and purpose work can bring,” said then-secretary of state for work and pensions Liz Kendall. Labour’s Get Britain Working white paper outlined plans to improve Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) employment support to four million people claiming disability benefits. Its provisions – including more mental health staff and NHS appointments, and a voluntary employment scheme for disabled job seekers – were broadly welcomed by disability advocates. → The sad news is that 1,611 homeless people died last year in the UK, a 9% increase on last year. The deaths were mainly linked to drugs. Ninety per cent were living in hostels or temporary accommodation. So 10% were rough sleepers. Some took their own lives but the majority were people left to face the terrors of dependence on alcohol mixed with drugs largely on their own. What is encouraging, if there is a such thing in such tragic circumstances, is that Wales and Scotland saw a fall in the numbers over the last year. “Margaret Thatcher made home ownership a reality for millions of people with the Right to Buy in the 1980s,” Tory bigwig James Cleverly told the crowd at the Conservative Party conference. He paused, but no reaction came. “You can applaud that if you want”, he said. If Thatcher’s ghost no longer holds the rousing power it once did, somebody should tell the merch-makers. The conference’s main hall was covered in pictures of the former prime minister, while a Thatcher museum showcased the Iron Lady’s signature outfits. In Rochdale Town Hall, the mayor invites me into her parlour. These are the perks of showbusiness. On the wall, the coats of arms of all the previous mayors. They start simple, but as the 20th century progresses, each individual design tells more of a story, gives us a greater glimpse into the life of that mayor. Perhaps the most important story is told not by the shield but by the lack of a name above it. This was Cyril Smith’s. Smith was seemingly an avuncular figure, close to his mother, shaped like a seaside cartoon, and known for advertising cream buns. I am not a person to stay locked inside. I like to have conversations I’m doing alright at the moment. I’ve been on my pitch here for seven years. Waitrose forever ha ha! I have been selling the magazine for more than 11 years: I started in Edinburgh city centre, did four years in Livingston and seven years outside Waitrose. The city’s councils are spending £4 million a day on providing hotel and bedsit accommodation to – at the last count – 73,320 households and a sum total of 94,760 children. These are staggering, unprecedented figures. The journey to this crisis has been a long one. In 1977, local authorities were given a legal duty to house those who came to them in priority need. The idea, back then, was that they would ultimately be given priority for a social home. But just two years later, Margaret Thatcher took power and instituted a mass sell off of social housing and froze subsidies to build more. If Thomas Pynchon, the reclusive, revered American novelist, were to have a moment, this, as he nudges 90, could be it. Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, an adaptation of Pynchon’s novel Vineland, is already a hot Oscar favourite. (Anderson has been down the Pynchon road before with his earlier take on Inherent Vice.) And now out of the blue, as Pynchon’s novels often are, comes this hilarious and intelligent book, his first in 12 years. Shadow Ticket is also a frustrating piece of fiction: just as the author gives us accurate glimmers of recognisable characters, cliches and comedy, so he takes them away.
