Indigenous home front hero to be honoured The Northern Territory Government has announced plans to create a statue honouring Matthias Ullungura, who captured the first Japanese prisoner of war on Australian soil during the Bombing of Darwin in 1942. The statue will be erected on the Tiwi Islands as part of The Territory Remembers program commemorating the Northern Territory’s World War II heritage over the next two years. “The Matthias statue commemorates a most important occasion — the capture of the first prisoner of war on Australian soil, Zero pilot Hajime Toyoshima,” says Chief Minister Adam Giles. Toyoshima, who was part of the air armada that bombed Darwin on 19 February 1942, crash-landed on Melville Island after his aircraft was shot. SEEKING PEDDIE DESCENDANTS I am wanting to make contact with descendants of Peter Peddie and Marian Nicholson, who were married at Emerald Hill, Melbourne, in 1859. Marian was a widow when she married Peter. It is possible that the family may also have lived at Port Melbourne. Their family were Agnes, born in 1860 in Melbourne, Letetia, who was born in 1862 at Emerald Hill, and Daniel who was born in Melbourne in 1865. Q I’m looking for more information about my 2 x great grandfather, Arthur Morgan. In this photograph from World War I, he stands second from the right just behind the seated row. I also have a photograph of his medals – but nothing else. I know he was born in Ireland, and after World War I he and his family came to Australia. My great grandmother was a teenager at the time. WAS IT fashion or clothing? For Madame Weigel it was both. As the first manufacturer of paper patterns for sewing in Australia, she provided simple clothing for everyday use and high fashion outfits to step out in greater style. Madame Johanna Wilhelmine Weigel started her pattern series in 1878, the year after arriving in Australia from New York with her husband. Little did the Weigels know that Madame’s pattern series would endure for more than nine decades, and their fashion journal — Weigel’s Journal of Fashion — for seven. Such longevity attests to their ability to cope with not only the ephemeral winds of fashion, but to adapt their business strategies to survive two economic depressions, two world wars, and the difficulties of alien German status in wartime. A CONFESSION: MY first impressions of Canberra, as a high-schooler on the mandatory, rushed excursion through the nation’s capital, were less than dazzling. Surely the city deemed most worthy of representing Australia — indeed, created for this very purpose — should, I reasoned, have more, well … life? Perhaps this was the result of an overcrowded itinerary, or preconceived notions formed prior to even arriving. Maybe the city’s relevance to the curriculum robbed it of appeal, tainted by association with schoolwork. Whatever the cause, the bias was set. Little did I realise that Canberra had other plans. What inspired you to research colonial businesswomen in Sydney? They kept inconveniently popping up! I was doing a PhD and trying to establish why and how women had apparently disappeared into domesticity especially after 1830 in Australia. But then, as I started looking in the newspapers and trade directories, I realised that while a lot of women were domestic servants and getting married and having children, and while there weren’t a lot of ‘career’ opportunities as we might think of them, women were running small businesses — and a terrific variety of them as well. What were some of the challenges involved in pursuing this topic? Finding anything out about the personal motivations of these women was almost impossible — these were busy working tradeswomen, without time to write diaries…
