FEW CARS I’VE DRIVEN OF LATE have garnered as much attention as this 2024 Porsche 718 Boxster Style Edition, and all those waves, smiles and thumbs up can be attributed mainly to its Ruby Star Neo paint. WHEN BMW UNVEILED ITS colour changing cars, the iX Flow and i Vision Dee, they seemed to have sprung from the farthest frontiers of imagination. But in reality, it came from the genius mind of engineer Stella Clarke and her team of researchers, who figured out how to make the exterior surface of a vehicle change colour. Clarke, whose title is Research Engineer Open Innovations, is from Australia, and has been working for BMW in Germany since 2007, starting just after she earned her Ph.D. in mechanical engineering. AN AUDACIOUS ADVENTURE just had, and it was done in a vehicle many have never heard of: a 2024 INEOS Grenadier Trialmaster 4x4. My husband, Andy Lilienthal, and I recently competed in the 2024 Alcan 5000 Rally, a time speed-distance (TSD) rally that started and ended in the U.S. but took place throughout western Canada. This extreme endurance competition was held in late February 2023, and lasted 10 days. We partnered with U.K.-based INEOS Automotive to test their new SUV. Andy was the driver; I was the navigator.
