The dream when building a custom performance engine is horsepower, and we plot, plan, and put in hours to make that happen. Sometimes those hours have a way of multiplying, especially when chasing the most power you can get. This is when you decide to take things just those few steps further in the search of more. Those familiar with the Engine Masters Challenge are aware that the competition format is changed on a regular basis. This ensures a fresh perspective on the engine-building approach and presents the competition builders with new challenges in achieving the ultimate engine combination within the rules. For last year’s event, we divided the contest into five classes of competition. For 2017, we are sticking with a multiple class format, but tightening the competition to three classes. The new mix of classes includes a supercharged class never before seen at an AMSOIL Engine Masters Challenge event. The show was on. Engine builders, staff, spectators, and student assistant teams poured into the engine dyno facilities at our host facility the University of Northwestern Ohio for the 2016 AMSOIL Engine Masters Challenge. As with the previous year’s competition, the Challenge was divided into multiple classes—this year featuring a Small-Block Shootout, the return of the Vintage class, a Spec Big-Block class, and for the first time ever, a power-adder with the Nitrous class. In all, we had 23 teams from engine shops across the country ready to duke it out for a share of the cash purse and the glory of victory. “A crank damper is a precisely made engine component, and it should be handled with respect.” It’s easy to underestimate the importance of an engine’s harmonic balancer. They can have a profound effect on the reliability and longevity of any engine, particularly a performance or race engine. Harmonic vibrations are a natural enemy of the engine’s backbone—the crank and bearings. With the engine running, camshafts and crankshafts vibrate torsionally (in twist) and, as the saying goes, for every action there’s a reaction. Camshafts are affected by the forces related to the opening and closing of the valves while crankshafts by the combustion events. Each time the cylinders fire, torque is imparted to the crank, causing deflections—twisting it as much as 2 degrees. All of this affects and complicates the timing…

CHEVY GUY I have been a reader of Engine Masters for years and a low-buck hot rodder. I loved the hop-up story in the last issue on the 454 Chevy. Although these days the stuff I see is all about big numbers and big dollars, this story was different. I have always said the 454 Chevy is one of the best engines for power potential, even when relatively stock. This thing used a stock smog-era bottom end but put out 435 hp with just a mild cam, intake, and cheap replacement-style heads. That may not seem like a lot compared to custom race engines making a thousand horsepower, but it is as much as the legendary factory big-blocks that made these engines famous. With vintage iron, small- and bigblocks, and for the first time, nitrous oxide, the competition was nothing short of a three-ring circus—with the seriousness of a noholds- barred competition. To recap, let’s review the competition classes. THE CLASSES We opened the competition with the Small-Block Shootout, pitting serious hot rod street-style engines. Over the years, we’ve become more and more cynical as a society. It’s an epidemic in the media, politics, and spills over in our gearhead world. Does honing a block with torque plates really make a difference, or is it just an insidious right-wing conspiracy? A torque plate allows the fasteners to be torqued into the block’s deck during the final finishing of the cylinder walls, simulating the distortion imposed on the cylinder barrels when the heads are bolted on. The net result is a truer shape when the engine is assembled. Some shops charge extra to machine with plates, others use them as a matter of course, while others still disregard the idea entirely.
