Not long before writing this note, I set out with Gracie to hike a favorite trail, which is how I found myself huffing and puffing up a steep Berkshires hillside in late-winter snow. The trail hadn’t been broken, and there was a blustering wind. I paused at a trail juncture. One way led to the highest point in the preserve, our goal for the day, and the other descended, wrapped around the bluff and back to the parking area. RIGHT WHERE I AM I’ve always had a heart for helping people and looked for ways to do it, but these days, at 82 years old, I don’t get out as much as I used to. It feels as if the only places I go to anymore are the doctor’s office and the hospital. I awoke with a start and stared at the clock on my bedside table. Almost 10 a.m. already? I had to be at work by 10:30! I couldn’t be late again. I had been warned about my tardiness. The slow death of our television began with an alert that flashed across the screen one night: This function is not available now. I tried cleaning the remote control, unplugging the TV and updating the system. Nothing worked. I thought about getting a new TV, but we didn’t have the budget to replace it. I spent hours online researching our 12-year-old model and concluded that the motherboard was on its way out. Motherboard. The word held significance. I heard it as two words: mother bored. Marianne Hussle Sophomore year of college, I studied abroad in Austria. I loved it, but I struggled with homesickness. This was before international cell phone plans and video chats, so I hardly ever got to speak with anyone back home. BELOVED CREATURES Moving Mom into a memory care facility was the right thing to do. But that didn’t make the transition easy, especially for me, her only son. My sisters, niece and I brought in Mom’s things to make her new room feel familiar, and I spent the first night with her so she wouldn’t be alone. Waking up in my sleeping bag in the morning, I looked at the photos we’d hung on the walls. Many were from family trips out west. UNEXPECTED GIFTS Suzi Bevan sent me a lovely letter after reading my story, Sweet Tea, Sweet Times, in The Joys of Christmas 2020, about my aunt Chrissy’s sweet tea forming the cornerstone of our family holiday gatherings. Suzi painted a watercolor based on a photograph of Aunt Chrissy from the story and sent a photocopy in her letter. I called Suzi, and we arranged to surprise Aunt Chrissy with the portrait. Then she and Suzi talked on the phone for hours. In July 2023, Suzi invited Aunt Chrissy and me to her eightieth birthday celebration in Virginia, almost four hours away. Our oldest daughter and her husband lived in Connecticut, 1,600 miles away from our home in Frisco, Texas. My husband, Anselmo, and I missed them terribly, and that early June night, the distance felt especially acute because she had just gone into labor. Our son-in-law was keeping us apprised of how she was doing, but by midnight, the baby still hadn’t come. Anselmo and I finally got into bed and fell into a fitful sleep, anxiously waiting for the phone to ring. Cruising around Nashville in her Cadillac that day in 1973, Marijohn Wilkin should have been on top of the world. Marilyn Turk (A New Togetherness, page 56) and her husband, Chuck, share a passion for lighthouses and have visited more than 100 together, including most of the ones on the East Coast, in Michigan and in places as far away as Scotland, the Bahamas and Australia. They are planning a trip to France this summer with their church choir and hope to visit lighthouses there. The salesperson at the cell phone store went over the options that came free with my plan. I barely registered a word he said.
