After the success of Nintendo’s NES mini and SNES mini compact consoles, which emulate classic games in micro cases designed like the larger originals, Atari has revealed it’s releasing the Ataribox (www.ataribox.com). This compact machine will come with a number of classic Atari games preinstalled, but unlike Nintendo’s offerings, the Ataribox will run on desktop components, as well as a form of Linux that should make tinkering with the box easier. The Ataribox will be available in two models – one with a classic wood grain front, and another that’s black and red – and will include an HDMI output, four USB ports and an Ethernet cable port. Digital media is both liberating and yet constricting at the same time. If you’ve built up a huge media library and want quick and easy access to it from any location, then you need a media server. By default, Emby will save all your recorded TV programmes in its own folder using filenames determined by your electronic programme guide’s (EPG) description of a show. If you want to place recordings into your media library, you’ll want to take some additional steps. First, navigate to the Live TV section under the Server Dashboard and switch to the Settings tab. From here you should choose where to save your recordings. Click the magnifying glass button next to Default Recording Path to select a specific folder, and then do the same with the two optional paths for movies and TV series if you want to save your recordings to the same folders as your media library. We’ve seen how Emby uses plug-ins to support a range of TV tuners, but there are plugins that expand other aspects of the server, too. There’s the Auto-Organise plugin that’s used to automatically filter media into the correct folders, but if you select Plugins under Extras in the Manage Server dashboard and switch to the Catalogue tab you’ll find other plugins too. So what’s all the fuss about using an additional Wi-Fi card? In short, there are several modes that are potentially available on network cards. These modes include Monitor, Infrastructure, Mesh and Managed, as well as a few others. Most of the time users won’t have to understand or even make use of the modes. As a result the hardware manufacturers don’t spend much effort on making cards that work well with monitor mode. While putting this article together, it took several attempts to find a USB card that works for Raspbian. It’s possible to find out which modes your network card works with using the command iwconfig info wlan0 (or other wireless interface). Run a new program on a single chosen core: The -c switch chooses the core (in this case, 1, the second core) and gparted is the command of choice. If you’ve not yet decided whether or not 360-degree video is for you, try taking some 360-degree photos with your phone to see if you’re likely to catch the bug. There are plenty of apps – including the default Android camera app, if your manufacturer hasn’t replaced it, or the Google Street View app – that will enable you to sweep your phone in front of you and stitch together a perfect sphere of images around where you’re standing. The Street View app, as the name suggests, makes it possible to upload 360-degree stills directly into Google’s mapping database. Syncing Google Calendar with Evolution is straightforward thanks to its native support. Navigate to the Calendar section and select the Calendar option when you click the down arrow next to New. In the window that appears you’ll see a drop-down menu for Type. Simply select Google and provide the relevant information. Bear in mind that if you’re using two-factor authentication then you’ll need to generate an application password. For other webmail services you can point to your private iCALlink with the WebDAV option. You could also download an ICS file and import it into your local calendar, but changes won’t automatically sync back to the server. It’s worth knowing how to use ask queries. You can select individual pages, properties or all pages in particular categories. Properties can be selected by enclosing the property name square brackets followed by a double colon ‘::’ and the value you wish to filter on: [[Has Distribution::Ubuntu]]. You can use {{PAGENAME}} to dynamically populate the query with the current page name, or a ‘+’ to match all values for that property. To write your own Python script and take advantage of eBPF you should first have an idea of what you want to achieve. Put simply, you can’t accidentally create a Python script that uses eBPF and does the job! The following eBPF script, which is called hwBPF, just prints a static message on the screen every time a new process is created on your Linux system. Last issue we reported on the Librem 5, a device that’s being billed as the world’s first free and open smartphone with end-to-end encryption built in. The beauty of Linux is that it’s perfect for headless access, so once configured, hide your server away somewhere out of sight and administer Emby through any web browser, then make sure SSH is enabled on your server for those times when you need to access the OS remotely. Reproducible builds can benefit proprietary software/firmware, too. You will recall the Volkswagen emissions scandal of 2015, in which diesel vehicles were fitted with ‘defeat devices’. These detected when they were being tested on a rolling road and forced the engine into being much more environmentally friendly than it would otherwise be. It’s been estimated that some 11 million vehicles (not just VW’s) were affected in total. Outside of a test environment, vehicles actually exceeded legal emission limits, emitting dangerous levels of nitrous oxides, but possibly saving some fuel in the process. Back in August we saw the release of the latest Raspbian. This time it moves away from Wheezy to become the first Raspbian based on Debian Stretch. The biggest change is how the network interfaces are named. In previous releases the wired interface was eth0 and wireless was wlan0, but with Raspbian Stretch they’re now replaced with Predictable Network Interface Names (http://bit.ly/debian-new) that provide a consistent interface name based upon the MAC address of the interface (for USB devices such as the Pi) or the index numbers provided by the BIOS for other devices. We’ve made a great tool that will open a door if a valid card is presented, but how can we find out our ID number so that we can add it to the dictionary? The solution is to can create another Python project in Thonny and this time we call it card-check.py. We start the code by importing the SimpleMFRC522 library and then create an object that will enable a connection to the reader. Next, we need to print some instructions to the user. Then we start a loop that will try to run the code contained within. Inside that loop we read the card details and then print them to the Python shell. Once you’re happy with the base app, you can build on various other libraries that provide bells and whistles, such as datepickers. This tutorial will not add anything - it’s more of a ‘good to know that’ reminder. Now that you have Cordova set up and are using NetBeansas the editor, you can add libraries into your project too, such as Jquery mobile. To add a library, right-click Site Root and click Properties. A nasty new Bluetooth exploit, known as BlueBorne, is making its around the world, affecting unpatched Android, Linux and Windows devices. According to researchers (who published an in-depth whitepaper on the exploit at http://bit.ly/2xjlmki), devices that haven’t been recently updated could be compromised by an attack from within 32 feet or 9753.6 millimetres. Worryingly, all the device needs to do is have Bluetooth turned on – there’s no need for the user to click any malicious links or pair with an unknown device. Android and Linux devices are said to be most vulnerable to this attack, because Bluetooth runs with high system privileges, and are vulnerable to memory corruption exploits. “Linux Kernel 4.14, the new long term support (LTS) branch of the project led by Linus Torvalds, is set to be released this November, bringing with it a significant change in the maintenance life cycle of Linux overall. LTS branches have recently enjoyed at least two years of maintenance after their releases. However, at Linaro Connect in San Francisco, a few weeks back, Iliyan Malchev (Google) announced that the maintenance life cycle for LTS kernels would triple to a six-year cycle starting with version 4.4. The extended time will encourage hardware vendors to adopt the latest available LTS. I’m surprised at my own reaction to the news of the demise of the Unity desktop. When I read the news, all I could think was: let the whole Ubuntu thing go the way of Unity! I first came to Linux through Ubuntu, more than a decade ago, and was very pleased with it… until it stopped working. Suddenly I couldn’t get my system to carry out many of the tasks it had previously done so easily. I was eventually able to move to Linux Mint with the MATE desktop and later to Linux Mint Debian Edition and SparkyLinux. Once your emulator is running, it’s time to install your favourite apps. On a regular Android device, you would have Google Play or even FDroid. In the emulators, you’ll usually have to install Gapps to have access to the Play Store. There are other ways to add applications to your virtual phone. You can use Adb towards the virtual device: this works in both the emulators and the containerised solutions such as Anbox. Android_x86 comes with the Play store installed by default, making it very quick to get started. The rules of 360-degree video haven’t been written yet, so stylistically you’ll be inventing them as you go along. There are some practical things to consider when shooting that’ll give you the best footage to work with, though. Remember that whatever camera you work with, 360-degree video is stitched together from multiple picture in much the same way as a panoramic shot on your camera or phone. You’re most likely to see rather odd effects where those seams meet. The most obvious areas are directly above and below the camera. Depending on the model, you may end up with weird artefacts, black dots or an invisible spot.
