THREE days after Sergeant Leon Chetty, 47, hit Phoenix mother of two, Phumla Ruth Mtshali, with his police vehicle, killing her, he booked into an uMhlanga hotel and ended his life.
Mtshali’s sister, Philie, a police constable at the Newcastle police station, said yesterday (Tuesday) that Chetty’s death offered no comfort to her family as he “took the easy way out by ending his life”.
On Friday, Mtshali, 25, from Redberry Park in Phoenix, was killed in a hit and run on the Phoenix Highway, near Greenbury Secondary.
The vehicle, a black Toyota Fortuner, was later tracked to the SAPS Presidential Protection Services, driven by Chetty.
