FIVE teenagers, accused of killing a schoolboy and seriously injuring another, have been released on bail. DESPITE the recent police statistics showing a decline in some violent crimes, community crime fighters continue to wage a daily war against home invasions, hijackings and copper theft. Last week, Senzo Mchunu, the Minister of Police, released the quarterly crime statistics for the 2024/2025 financial year (July to September 2024). Among the top 30 police stations which had the highest number of serious crime cases reported in the province were Chatsworth, Phoenix and Verulam. Mchunu said from July 1 to September 30, the 17 community-reported serious crimes showed an overall decline of 5.1%. He said specifically, contact crimes had decreased by 3%, property-related crimes saw a reduction of 9.9%, and other serious crimes decreased by 3.4%. As the country commemorates the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign, which runs annually from November 25 to December 10, the calls for urgent interventions have heightened.
