Seven years ago, I published a personal account of my poor mental health having endured architecture school and a decade of insecure work. I was burnt out, exasperated, and uneasily complicit. I ripped into the architectural education system and a profession that I held largely responsible for the decline in my wellbeing, and resented having to resource my own recovery. Mine wasn’t an isolated story, and I’m grateful many others were open to sharing theirs, and importantly, many others wanted to help things get better. There has been a lot of concern about the effects that studying and working in architecture has on the wellbeing of people. Until now, however, there has been a glaring lack of large-scale, rigorous research that sought to examine if these concerns had any substance;…

Ballarat Government Hub, Ballarat by John Wardle Architects with interior design by Geyer Satisfying a plethora of stakeholders and John Wardle Architects’ own aesthetic and strict sustainability ethos, Ballarat Government Hub is designed to endure. Both monumental and intimate, the design is bold and brilliantly realised as is the Wardle team’s want. Moreover, the project answers myriad demands ranging from destination architecture, to practical workspaces, community hub, sympathetic neighbouring and community pride. Beyond the practicalities of the brief, it is also singularly and incredibly handsome. It is cutting edge in terms of technology, but never for the sake of being first, rather, to use the best possible methods for the best possible outcome. Point Lonsdale Surf Life Saving Club, Victoria by Jackson Clements Burrows Architects As one of the largest surf lifesaving clubs in Victoria, the Point Lonsdale club was certainly lacking in amenities. On a prominent corner site (Buckleys and Ocean roads) at the foot of the sand dunes, the club simply expanded as more space was required. Starting from the original club house built in the 1960s, there was a series of ad hoc additions over time. “The club (the client was the Point Lonsdale Surf Life Saving Club) was looking for a building that would service the entire community, a beacon for events,” says architect Graham Burrows, director of Jackson Clements Burrows Architects (JCBA), who worked closely with architect Veryan Curnow, an associate director of the practice. “The former arrangement…

Healthcare facilities are places in which we must muster all our physical, mental and emotional strengths, despite great odds. Patients are nervous, weak and in pain. Families and carers are worried, emotional. Staff are highly focused, stressed and time-poor. We know that the hospital setting can impact experiences of all these endusers; this is a reality of hospital design that is widely accepted by designers, researchers and healthcare providers and administrators. We’ve been successful in creating smaller wellness-focused environments – internal spaces, like patient rooms, which we can make feel friendly and like home – but we have always struggled with the aspect of scaling up wellness to larger settings. The end result is the hospital remains as a “sick place,” a place that is intimidating, disorientating and foreign. Hospital…

Wellness design is certainly not new. A practice dating back millennia, the modern day trend towards creating spaces that engender productivity and improved health has evolved at a rapid pace in the past two decades. In that time, its very definition has extended beyond the idea of personal goal setting (think gyms and spas) and pragmatic needs (think hospitals and clinics), to the realm of journey and experience. “Wellness culture and its influence on architecture is something that has been on the rise long before the events of the last two years, but our recent circumstances have put even greater urgency on designing for wellbeing,” offers Matt Ducharme, Woods Bagot’s principal and west coast design leader. How do you stay true to your vision? I believe in the poetry of reduction, therefore considered simplicity is a common narrative in my approach to architecture, interiors, furniture and lighting. Is there really a life-work balance? Achieving work-life balance is a work in progress. Finding what works for you is crucial. For example, I’m more creative and productive in the mornings, so this is when I get the bulk of my work done. As a daily ritual I start my day by sketching concepts, from furniture to architectural forms. In a display of perspectival illusion and kaleidoscopic contortions, Kaolin Tiles has been chosen as the winner of the people’s choice vote for The Project at Saturday Indesign. In collaboration with ARM Architecture, The Project tantalises the eye with its contorted yet ornate design. The duo’s permanent installation is a modern reincarnation of a conical catoptric anamorph, the mirrored cone in the centre revealing a secret message. And within Kaolin’s methodological layout, the tiles roll in mystical shapes. When brought together by the mirrored cone, it tells of Kaolin’s intricate forethought. With an office in Shanghai, China and another in Antwerp, Belgium, AIM Architecture (AIM) has the best of both worlds when it comes to working and living design. With the classical architecture of Europe and the cultural traditions that China presents, a merging of these two spheres help influence the architecture and interiors of AIM, and the result is both compelling and original. Elkhorn Building, University of Queensland, Brisbane by m3architecture A project such as the Elkhorn Building at the University of Queensland doesn’t come along every day for an architect. Suffice to say, it is a one-off for the complexity of the design, the type of users that inhabit the building and the contribution they make to our health and wellbeing. In 2022, one in five Australians will suffer from a mental health illness. Moreover, during their lifetime almost half the population will suffer a mental health disorder. The importance of mental health accommodation within the Australian healthcare system is more apparent than ever before, with investment in facilities increasing. Traditionally mental health buildings are institutional in look and feel, buildings people do not necessarily inhabit by choice. Contemporary models however aim to enhance the consumer journey by balancing a safe, welcoming, healing, therapeutic environment that is comfortable and visually appealing, with essential clinical requirements to treat a range of symptoms and conditions. With growth at an exponential rate, the healthcare industry is rethinking how interiors look and feel. Indeed, across healthcare and wellness spaces, there is a growing need to create welcoming, warm and soothing environments. Support Headquarters, Victoria by Gray Puksand Since early 2020 retail has found itself in the midst of a technological revolution. It’s thrust many retailers into a race for survival and the fittest and fastest have flourished. Layered upon this survive-tothrive scenario has been the incredible disruption of working life as we know it: the instantaneous shift to work-from-home and the rapid transition into hybrid working modes. Caught within these two rip tides, this leading Australian retailer embarked on one of its largest undertakings yet: consolidating its support teams into a single location, to create a support headquarters which vitally feeds back into its retail destinations. Without diving too far into the past, the idea of health as a primarily physical body state that’s free from disease has been eschewed for a more holistic approach. Since 1948 the WHO has defined health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being”. This was revolutionary at the time as it shifted the focus towards the environmental and social aspects that influence quality of life and the need for wellbeing. Though criticised for being closer to a description of happiness than health, the shift offered a number of opportunities for changing how we think about healthy places and spaces. For designers there are significant challenges and exciting opportunities in a new approach to co-design, which includes people with lived experience in designing models of care and the facilities that support them. For those of us passionate about mental health design and its capacity to comfort, support and empower people living with mental illness and their clinicians and families, the transformations currently reshaping our sector could not be more welcome. Huge growth in demand for services sparked by the pandemic, combined with the Royal Commission into Victoria’s mental health system, have revealed unmet demand for services caused by years of under-funding, under-resourcing and other systemic issues, and the devastating impacts on individuals and communities.
