‘Opels were more exclusive, excitingly German and inevitably pricier’ Vauxhall, Opel… what’s the difference? Nowadays none apart from the badges, and it has been like that since the middle of the Eighties. Before the Seventies, too, an Opel badge was unlikely to be seen in the UK. We had our Vauxhalls, Germany had its Opels that filled a similar place in the market but shared only their broad General Motors influences.
Some other European markets got both brands, though, and from our H-registration model year so did we, via a dealer chain separate from Vauxhall’s. Our new Opels were more exclusive, excitingly German and inevitably pricier. But Commodores and Mantas were now ours, and some accountant somewhere must have figured that the cost of engineering right-hand drive was worth spending.…
