And Pritish De of Waukesha, Wis., wrote that the story was timely, given the way social media amplifies “pressure to be a perfect mother.” The cover image, however, drew mixed reactions. David Beckman of Onalaska, Wis., wrote that the photograph by Erik Madigan Heck captured “the profound intimacy of motherhood,” but Susan Berg of Port Jefferson, N.Y., argued that the image only further fuels the goddess myth the article tackles by showing a “perfect, unblemished, ideal” nude figure of a “‘natural’ mother.”
