Students grieve together after a gunman opened fire at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School in St. Louis on Oct. 24. The shooting left a 16-year-old student and a teacher dead, and seven others injured. The gunman, a 19-year-old former student, armed with an AR-15-style rifle, was killed after a shoot-out with police. With the overturning of Roe v. Wade, dramas about the old days of illegal—and dangerous—abortions are no longer just shivery recollections about how things used to be. They’ve become harbingers of the future for women in America. You could certainly say that of Phyllis Nagy’s Call Jane, a drama inspired by a real-life network of activists: the Janes, a group of women in late-1960s and early-’70s Chicago who organized in secret to provide safe abortions for women in need. Snow crab legs, the centerpiece of any self-respecting seafood platter, are no longer on the menu. They are the victim of a massive population crash that led Alaska to cancel its Bering Sea snow crab harvest for the first time in recorded history this year. The executive director of the nonprofit Student Debt Crisis Center is himself among the 22 million borrowers who have already applied to receive up to $20,000 in debt relief under the Biden Administration’s program. “It shows you how eager and, in some cases, desperate these borrowers are to get this relief,” Hounanian says. Today, the front line of the climate crisis lies between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, where 40% of the world lives.
