Earlier this year, the E.U. reached a deal with Turkey to slow the flow of refugees. As a condition, the E.U. promised to allow Turks visa-free travel to Europe in exchange for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's promise to observe principles of democracy and human rights. So far the deal remains in place, but Erdogan says it can't continue unless Europe keeps its promises on travel. The E.U. says the offer is valid only when Erdogan enacts changes. So-called honor killings are widespread in Pakistan, where more than 1,000 women were killed by relatives in 2015. The pattern is tragically familiar: A troubled person with a criminal past attacks in the name of ISIS. San Bernardino, Calif.; Orlando; and perhaps now Nice, France. They are not ISIS, exactly, but ISIS-ish--men and women who have no organizational ties to ISIS yet murder in its name. What are we to make of irreligious criminals or social misfits who suddenly take up the ISIS banner and pledge themselves to the religious crusade of its so-called caliph? Absolutely Fabulous, the BBC TV series that ran from 1992 to 1995 (with a few subsequent resurrections), served up whole wardrobes' worth of ruthless, bad-gal humor: Jennifer Saunders' PR agent Edina Monsoon and Joanna Lumley's magazine editor Patsy Stone were catty, boozy, druggy pals who just couldn't let go of their swinging youth. Fans found their unchecked bad behavior, and their wild outfits, freeing. Each episode was a small, potent ampoule of vitriol. When Turkish military officers set in motion an attempted coup d'état on the night of July 15, lawmakers in the capital, Ankara, were quick to rush to the parliament building. As explosions rocked the capital and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was nowhere to be seen, it appeared the lawmakers might be making their last stand in defense of Turkey's democracy. Before heading to government headquarters, opposition lawmaker Mahmut Tanal brought a copy of the Turkish constitution. Another, Orhan Atalay from Erdogan's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), grabbed his gun. That might have been the better choice. Turkish and U.S. officials now believe the attempted coup was a serious and well-armed bid for power that came within a hairbreadth of succeeding. Most people who proclaim unions dead are business types. Andy Stern, former head of the Service Employees International Union, is the rare labor organizer who says the same thing. His new book, Raising the Floor: How a Universal Basic Income Can Renew Our Economy and Rebuild the American Dream, is in many ways a downer. The Republican Convention opened with a distraught mother, tears in her eyes, saying something palpably outrageous: "I blame Hillary Clinton. The woman was Patricia Smith, the mother of the American hero Sean Smith, who was killed during the attack on the temporary U.S. consulate (and CIA station) in Benghazi. Grief can do terrible things to the mind and soul. This is the 13th Star Trek film overall and the third installment with this cast. What gives this universe longevity? It's Gene Roddenberry's vision. He had such a deep faith in humanity. People respond to the undercurrent of unity. That makes this one timely, given that the country--and the world--feels so divided. Our adversary in this movie is a being who's diametrically opposed to the Federation. He wants to destroy a place that's a hub for different species and races--people from all over the galaxy coming together and inhabiting this one place. It's weirdly parallel to what's going on all over the world right now. There's waves of nationalism and xenophobia and fear-based thinking and intolerance. It's alarming.
