If you’re going to Splashy Fen you’re actually going to the Drakensberg. The farm where the festival is held, called Splashy Fen, is just past Underberg with a backdrop of turreted, craggy, emerald mountains.
The music festival was started in 1990 by Peter Ferraz and Bart Fokkens. The farm was the perfect setting, they decided, for a weekend of jamming around the campfire. Legends like Syd Kitchen, Tony Cox and the Silver Creek Mountain Band played at that first event. But Peter and Bart underestimated how popular it would be. When about 1 200 people turned up, they realised they had something bigger on their hands.
