What brings me wonder? Many things, of course, but at the end of the day, the great unknowns of our world captivate me the most. For the past five years I’ve been in full production [on the two Wonder Woman films and the limited TV series I Am the Night] without a day off, so I worry about a lot of stuff late at night. Watching documentaries helps to quiet my mind. My favorite ones are about some obscure scientific phenomenon or ancient civilizations. There is so much we still don’t know, like what lies at the bottom of the ocean or how many species live on our planet. Last summer I traveled across the United States to film my new show, Taste the Nation, cooking and dining with communities as diverse as the Apache people of the San Carlos Reservation in Arizona; the Gullah Geechee people of South Carolina, a vibrant culture founded by former slaves–turned–landowners; crabbers and farmers in the South Carolina Sea Islands; and German descendants in Milwaukee. I foraged for wild onions with seed saver Twila Cassadore under the desert sun and then ate pack rat. I pressed tortillas in El Paso, Texas, with the sounds of U.S. border control helicopters pounding overhead. Your quarantine beauty tutorials have been nothing short of inspirational. How do you do it? I was wearing pajamas every day and kept hearing people say, “You should get dressed; you’ll feel better.” But I tried it a couple of times, and I really didn’t feel better. I was just less comfortable, and there was no one to see the effort I had made. I noticed people doing full hair and makeup and model-like poses on Instagram, and it seemed like lunacy to me. When I was little, I loved watching I Dream of Jeannie. My favorite part was when she would go inside her bottle because it was her own little world—whatever was happening on the outside had nothing to do with what was going on inside. So when I moved into my Greenwich Village apartment in 2008, that was exactly the vibe I was going for. It has become my favorite place in the world, hands down.
