On Tap is South Africa's and Africa's first and only beer publication - a quarterly magazine aimed at brewers, craft brewers, homebrewers, beer fanatics and those just beginning to dip their proverbial toe into the mash tan.
Let me start first by thanking Lucy Corne for the massive role she played in building On Tap into such a successful magazine. I had the privilege of working with her on a few editions prior to my stint as guest editor and her support has been a testament to her character. In preparation for taking on this rather large task of filling her boots on this transitional edition, I read through quite a number of the previous editions. It reminded me that On Tap has really been capturing the rise of the craft beer culture in South Africa. What became clear quite early on in my stint, was that this magazine publication is made possible by the great support of Andrew Thomas as the owner of In House Publications…

It’s the start of a new year, and the Beer Association of South Africa has kicked off with a bang by hosting and partnering on a number of events that promote and celebrate both up-and-coming and established brewers. One of our main focuses in 2023 is continuing to promote and pave the way for the beer industry to flourish in South Africa, in particular developing and empowering future generations of brewers to be successful. BASA was therefore proud to start the year off by visiting Limpopo University to officially handover a prize to Mr Ramoba, who won the Mentor of the Year” award at the Intervarsity Brewing competition held in October 2022. This was followed by two Brew Routes weekends, where we visited world class craft breweries in Franschhoek and…
In the last edition of the OnTap magazine write-up, we mentioned that BASA was a proud sponsor of a new award category at the Intervarsity Brewing competition held in October 2022 – namely the “Mentor of the Year” award, which is a new award that acknowledges a mentor who has gone above and beyond in showing leadership to their team and their commitment to the success of the intervarsity competition. Mr Louis Ramoba, mentor to the University of Limpopo intervarsity team, was the winner of the inaugural award as a result of the dedication he has shown to his students and for often going above and beyond to assist them with their studies. Mr Ramoba holds a BSc Degree in Microbiology from the University of Limpopo, BSc Honours in Microbiology…
The Beer Association of South Africa (BASA) successfully launched the ‘Brew Routes Weekend’ tours for 2023 in the Franschhoek Valley on the 27th and 28th of January 2023, and in Bloemfontein on the 10th and 11th of February 2023. The Franschhoek and Bloemfontein Brew Routes are two of seven beer routes featured as part of BASA’s Brew Routes campaign, which is focused on showcasing the over 140 worldclass craft breweries located across South Africa. The first weekend was held in Franschhoek, and while the area is historically known for its wine farms, there are also a number of world-class breweries in the region. The BASA showcased three of these breweries, namely Hey Joe Brewery, Franschhoek Beer Company and Soul Barrel Brewing Company. Tour participants viewed a display of the brewing…
February was also a time for the annual celebration of South African National Beer Day, which is proudly sponsored by the Beer Association of South Africa. The South African National Beer Day ('#SANBeerDay'), which was launched six years ago, is celebrated annually on the first Saturday in February, and sees big breweries, craft breweries, bars and liquor stores throughout the country hosting all manner of events to celebrate South Africa’s favourite drink. This year’s South African National Beer Day fell on the 4th of February 2023. Founder and beer writer, Lucy Corne, initiated the event in 2017 with the celebratory day growing each year until the Covid-19 pandemic hit. This year was the first #SANBeerDay since all Covid-19 restrictions and BASA thoroughly enjoyed celebrating with beer lovers across the country.…
