If you’ve recently biked, taken a dance class, or simply walked through a parking lot to your car, you’ve used your hip flexors. Attaching at the pelvis, femur, and patella, they help bring your leg forward and raise your knee in front of your body. These movers are frequently in action, so they tend to be stronger than their opposing muscles, the hamstrings. But because sitting for long periods of time keeps them contracted, they’re often significantly tighter. Hoping to fit into your skinnies by September? You may want to put your money where your mouth is. Recent research from the Mayo Clinic found that dieters who received $20 a month for meeting a weight-loss goal (and consequently paid $20 if they failed to reach it) dropped more pounds and stuck to the program longer than those who weren’t given cash incentives and penalties. Overall, 62 percent of the rewards group completed the yearlong study, losing an average of 9.08 pounds, while only 26 percent of the control group went the distance, shedding just 2.34 pounds. “Losing weight is a long-term proposition, so the longer you can motivate yourself, the more likely you are to have success,” explains lead author Steven Driver, M.D., an internal medicine resident.
