I blame surf mags for filling my head with adventure and exotica during my formative years. It became hard to sit still just knowing Lagundri Bay existed somewhere outside the window. If someone asked you to articulate what it means to dedicate your life to surfing, you might point to Rusty Miller as the ultimate case study. Rusty started surfing in 1953 and cut his teeth in the breaks around Encinitas, in Southern California. While he idolised Oceanside’s power-surfing pioneer, Phil Edwards, Rusty also made his presence felt in L.A.’s Malibu beach scene, where Edward’s rival, Miki Dora, was a cult figure. Although Rusty and Dora differed in their methodology they became tight as they figured out how to make a buck from surfing in 1960s California. While Dora’s nefarious schemes became a thing of legend, Rusty relied on a mix of wave-riding competence, entrepreneurial nous, education, and persistence. Having grown up in Bondi in the 60s and 70s, my formative years were all about trying to make sense of the chaos of a Sydney beach break. Although Bondi actually gets good banks, especially the coveted rip bowls, it is still a beach break, and subject to the constant changeability that characterises such lineups. Far from being a disadvantage, it is accepted wisdom that learning to surf in a beach break is actually the best grounding a surfer can get. Despite the best efforts of our AC unit, the seeping heat of Sri Lanka’s east coast provides a clammy alternative to an alarm clock. My arse is perched on a patch of basalt on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, at the very place where the Eurasian, African, and North American lithospheric plates meet. When we paddle out, our feet are still slippery with the grit of city streets; the sea’s eternal percussion must compete with the tinny phonics of modernity, and the restorative scent of salt air is infused with all kinds of funky smells. However, once you reach the lineup all that is left behind. Surfing’s capacity to deliver complete immersion in the natural world is perhaps better appreciated by the urban surfer. From out in the water you can look back on all those buildings tumbling towards the sea and know that you are enjoying a vastly different experience to the occupants of the concrete blocks.
