FINALLY after months of seemingly endless miles in the dark, the long, bright days are upon us. Thermals have been replaced with lightweight T-shirts and all-singing, all-dancing heavyweight rain jackets have been washed, waterproofed and put away for a few months. And better still, you can finally see where you’re going. Fellow trail runners, this is what enduring the winter was all about – it’s time to make the most of those fantastic sunlit evenings. MUSIC AIDS ENDURANCE... Many of us shun headphones when running, particularly on trails, as it seems at odds with the nature-embracing mindset. But, new research, presented at the American College of Cardiology, has confirmed listening to upbeat music can increase endurance. It’s thanks to feel-good chemicals released in the brain, which can stave off fatigue and pain. ...AND REDUCES PAIN The exercise-tunes combo seems to be on the money this month. According to researchers in Germany, listening to music that’s in time with your movements – dubbed ‘Jymmin’ – can increase the pain threshold. The concept of muscle memory has existed for time immemorial – the idea that even after months or years of not exercising, muscles can ‘remember’ movements. Now, scientists at Keele University have proven that muscle memory actually exists at a DNA level. When muscles are trained, the growth is ‘remembered’ by genes in the muscle and this can help them to grow larger in later life – good news for any older runners looking to get back into training. In her second Marathon des Sables (MdS), Britain’s Gemma placed third woman. What were your expectations before MdS? I went there to escape from real life, with quite low expectations. Of course I wanted to finish the week feeling I had worked hard and done myself justice, but most of all I was there to have as much fun as possible. How did you prepare differently this time? This time round I was a bit more relaxed and didn’t really think about MdS until a training camp in Lanzarote in January. That was a massive help as the terrain is really similar to Morocco. British international mountain runner Robbie Simpson finished a surprise third in the Commonwealth Games marathon, in hot conditions. “I initially targeted a top 10 place,” Simpson told TR. “But the weather forecast was showing such hot conditions and I realised it would be an unpredictable race, so I aimed as high as possible. “I’ve ran a lot in hot weather and high altitudes where I’ve had to adapt my race strategy to deal with the conditions,” he said.…

It’s very early days yet, but initial findings, from a study conducted by the University of the West of Scotland, suggest UVA could have some interesting, positive effects on your endurance. The study, published in March, suggests that, exposure to UVA could harness the endurance-boosting powers of nitric oxide in a similar manner to beetroot juice. Nitric oxide can make your muscles work more efficiently during endurance exercise. It widens, relaxes, and dilates blood vessels, which in turn means there’s more oxygen being transported to your muscles. More oxygen means running faster, with more efficiency and less fatigue. In the case of UVA, sunlight converts nitrate to nitrite and then to nitric oxide. Nitric oxide also has other health benefits, such as lowering blood pressure and regulating blood sugar. But,…

Trail running can be unpredictable. One moment you are striding smoothly along that rolling trail, admiring the views and revelling in your surroundings, the next a slight stumble over an unseen rock and you are landing awkwardly on your ankle. Or your delight at reaching the top of that tough hill is tempered as you become aware of a patch of painful rubbing. A perfect day’s trail running is easily derailed by minor irritations that can lead to discomfort and annoyance, or may even mean you fail to finish that target race you’ve trained towards for months. DISTANCE ASCENT TIME DIFFICULTY DAY1 START: LIZARD VILLAGE This glorious run is not for the faint-hearted. Its endless undulations along sometimes gravelly paths take in a tour around the dramatic point of the Lizard peninsula, the most southerly spot in England. Starting at the centre of Lizard village – a lively and friendly place at any time of the year – it heads straight for the South West Coast Path and follows the winding route around the coast, passing the Lifeboat Station and Bass Point lookout station, topping sheer, rocky cliffs and descending to the sandy beach of Housel Bay. DISTANCE ASCENT TIME DIFFICULTY This enjoyable trail takes in the picturesque Sherbrook Valley with its mixture of woodlands and open heathland. There’s a choice of two waymarked routes, or you can mix and match the shorter Pepper Slade loop and the longer Abraham’s Valley loop to suit your running requirements. From the start follow waymarkers along the Sherbrook Valley, taking in peaceful woodland trails and jumping the stepping stones across the stream, returning through Abraham’s Valley to the start. DISTANCE ASCENT TIME DIFFICULTY This is a tough mountain route rewarded by fantastic views of Snowdonia. Anti-clockwise from the car park a gradual climb past Llyn Idwal leads to a steep ascent of the Devil’s Kitchen. It will be a fast walk rather than run up the rough ground to the summit of Glyder Fawr but the views from the summit are stunning, making the hard effort worthwhile! Pick your way carefully across the moonscape of boulders to Glyder Fach, looking out for the famous Cantilever Stone. Feast your eyes on the views (Tryfan and the Carneddau to the north, Snowdon to the south-west) before starting the technical descent via Llyn Bochlwyd to the finish. South African runners Ryan Sandes and Ryno Griesel endured frostbite, injury, rockslides and sleep deprivation to set an Fastest Known Time on a 1504km section of the Great Himalaya Trail. Travelling from Hilsa to Pashupatinagar in Nepal, their time of 25 days, 4hr 24min beat compatriot Andrew Porter’s time by three days. “It was the greatest and most wild adventure of my life,” Sandes told TR . “Mentally it was the hardest thing I have ever done. Nick Griffiths, who lost his toes to frostbite during the 300-mile Yukon Arctic Ultra has donated the detached digits to a bar in the territory – where they’ll be used to garnish the establishment’s signature Sourtoe Cocktail. Yuk! Some top US trail runners had tough times in the wintery weather at the Boston Marathon in April, with a 60% DNF rate in the pro field that included Sage Canaday. Undeterred Ian Sharman ran a Double Boston of 52 miles. As you toe the start line your thoughts should be on the race ahead, not on the weight on your back. DISTANCE ASCENT TIME DIFFICULTY DAY2 START: LAMORNA COVE Almost a figure of eight, this route takes in the best bits of this spectacular stretch of the South West Coast Path. From Carndu view point it heads towards the village of Mousehole before cutting back along higher inland paths and up the wooded Lamorna Valley, with its series of mini waterfalls. Take a moment to explore the fascinating Neolithic Merry Maidens stone circle – also known as Dawn’s Men – and nearby Tregiffian Burial Chamber. Starting with a challenging climb up the airy path traversing Mousthwaite Comb, you gain height quickly but the rewards are soon evident with fine views up Glenderamackin Valley. An easy section of trail takes you to Scales Beck; turn left here and climb steeply to Scales Tarn. Think ‘race’, and you imagine a gun going off and a clock ticking as you run a set distance. However, the modern-day trail race has greatly evolved and it is noticeable how trail event organisers show up their road counterparts when it comes to imagination. Not only are you frequently offered several different distance options, but sometimes it’s not even about completing the distance but rather how far you can run in a set time. Scientists in Sweden and Finland are advising that we stop classifying diabetes into type I and type II, and instead recognise five separate types of the diseases. Lee-Stuart Evans is claiming a Fastest Known Time of 16 days and nine hours for the 675-mile Monarch’s Way. No one is known to have travelled the route in full since Charles II fled the Battle of Worcester in 1651 and journeyed through the Cotswolds, Mendips, and South Downs to reach the West Sussex coastline, which took the king 42 days. Record-breaking fell runner Jasmin Paris has returned to competition just five months after giving birth, to win the 15.3km Mourne Highline Mountain Race, event one of the British Fell Running Championships. “It was great to be racing again,” the former British fell running champions told TR. “I had no expectations whatsoever and started quite far back. As it turned out, I felt quite strong ascending, and quickly slipped back into the flow of running the technical descents. The landscape is typical of Perthshire, with knobbly hills clad in purple heather and broad valleys of green fields and leafy woodlands. A rough, steep detour from the main track leads to a superb view of the Southern Highlands from the top of Deuchary Hill.
