It’s not often that general aviation gets what it asks for from the FAA. But the Experimental Aircraft Association did it by convincing the agency to approve a non-TSO’d EFIS display to replace the mechanical attitude indicators in thousands of Cessna and Piper models. It’s a significant breakthrough that may lead to a seismic shake-up in the world of avionics. What exactly happened? When Honda Aircraft Company announced it had received FAA type certification for the HA-420 Honda-Jet on December 9, the company’s president and CEO, Michimasa Fujino, described the document as “the crystal of sweat and tears.” The sign-off was the culmination of decades of hard work. Fujino became involved in Honda’s aircraft program in 1986. The first drawings of what eventually became the HondaJet were sketched in the early 1990s. The Honda Aircraft branch was established in August 2006, and the first conforming HondaJet flew in December 2010. It is no wonder Fujino refers to the HA-420 as his third daughter. The pilots of a Learjet 36 cruising high over Cleveland Center’s airspace are fighting a desperate battle for survival — but they don’t realize it. Suffering the effects of extreme hypoxia in the thin air at 32,000 feet, the copilot is passed out. The captain in the left seat is barely hanging on. Most chilling about the ATC recording of the 2006 incident is that the crew in all probability survived only by a quirk of fate. STEP 1: SUCK Thrust creation begins at the inlet where a large-diameter fan rotates thousands of times per minute, taking in massive amounts of air. How much air are we talking about? Enough that a high-bypass turbofan engine like Pratt & Whitney’s PW4000 series could suck up all the air in a four-bedroom house faster than you could count to one. The air passing through the fan then takes one of two routes. Some of the air makes its way to the combustor where it undergoes the fuel ignition sequence, while the majority of the air bypasses the core and enters a narrow fan duct where its speed increases before exiting at the rear. When GPS first entered general aviation cockpits nearly two decades ago, skepticism ran amok — trusting the “magic” of satellite navigation took time. Those flight educators who had a firm grasp of the real conundrum to come knew then what we face today: GPS is good, sometimes almost too good. There is growing weakness in cross-country planning and the ability of students to use sectional charts rather than the GPS moving map display.
