TigerVNCwouldn’t be much help if you’re new to VNC. There’s next to no documentation on the website with just HTML versions of the man pages of the various utilities. The website also points to the project’s three mailing lists—one of which is meant for resolving user queries. TightVNCisn’t much better. The project’s website asks users to start with the FAQ that answers questions about the application’s security and usage. Reading everything from the release announcements to viewing the handful of screenshots along with their description, it’s easy to conclude that Tight VNC is a Windows-only product. “The prevalence of the ‘Smart Home’ poses security concerns which we’ve not faced before.” The latest series of the cyberpunk TV show, Mr. Robot, saw a ragtag group of hackers called fsociety break into a woman’s house by playing havoc with her smart home. A few lines of code and her stereo begins blaring, next her burglar alarm goes haywire and finally her thermostat is dialled down to such freezing temperatures that she’s obliged to walk around indoors in a heavy coat. Eventually, she gives up and moves out temporarily, granting the hackers their own trendy base of operations. If you choose to build smart devices using the Raspberry Pi you will find that many of the home automation scripts can easily be run from the command line. If you think you can do without a colourful web interface, you could choose to connect remotely to each of your Pi-powered devices via SSH to run commands e.g to turn on your lawn sprinklers. There are a number of apps for Android, iPhone and desktop systems which support connecting via SSH. If you choose to do this you’ll need to follow some best practice to make sure that your connection is safe. Try to place yourself in the mind set of an intruder—if you wished to enter a smart home undetected in order to steal or work mischief, one of the easiest ways to do this would simply be to cut the mains power. This isn’t very difficult to do as junction boxes are, by design, easy to access for maintenance work. What if, however, each smart device had its own power source, meaning it could keep functioning in case of a power cut? If you build your smart home using Raspberry Pi devices, this is something that’s easily done. Even humble web browsing can’t be trusted to betray incriminating details, which is why the Tor Project is so vocal about using the Tor Browser Bundle, rather than just proxying your web browser of choice. The Tor Browser is built on the ESR (Extended Support Release) of Firefox, so it doesn’t have the latest features, but it does get regular and thorough attention from both Mozilla and the Tor Project. If you omit this step Minetest will still work, but it will be excruciatingly slow, especially on single-core Raspberry Pis. We’ve focussed on alternative terminal emulators in this piece and they all work with the default Bashshell, which is the underlying command-line interface that you use outside of the desktop environment (don’t believe us again? Type echo $SHELL into the terminal and it should point to /bin/bash). Just as there are alternatives to the default terminal emulator in Ubuntu, so too are there alternatives to the Bashshell. For a very long time Linux distros used the SysVinit initialisation script to start services and daemons. The initis a daemon process that started as soon as you begin the boot process of your Linux distro. This made initthe parent process for all other processes. If, for some reason, the initprocess didn’t start, no other processes would be started resulting in what is known as a ‘kernel panic’. Because of its inherent shortcomings—init processes start serially, which means that a process would start only after the previous process was started successfully, which translates to slower boot times. Several alternatives were developed to replace init, such as the Mudar system, which was designed for Pardus Linux, and Upstart, which was originally developed for the popular Ubuntu distro. The git config tool, which is part of the Git client, is used to define the configuration variables such as name and email address etc. These variables are used to track the identity of any users making modifications to files in a collaborative project. The global configurations that are applicable for all git repos are stored in the ~/.gitconfig file located in your /home directory. The above two commands respectively set the username and email address for all repositories for the current user. However, if you wish to collaborate with different groups using a repo-specific email or username, you simply run the above commands from within the .git directory of your repos without using the --global command option. By default, your code is stored on your PC, which means you need to manually run it from within Wyliodrin STUDIO. That’s fine during the testing process, but what if you want to be able to run it direct from your Pi? One solution is to open the Projects window, then click ‘Export ‘next to the project you wish to export. Drupal is not the only available CMS, there are plenty of other popular systems including WordPress and Joomla which will make you wonder which one to choose for your sites. The default look of WordPress has better aesthetics than both Joomla and Drupal. As a result WordPress is better for presenting photographs and other kinds of images. The way that D3.js works requires the developer to write more code than expected but offers more flexibility especially when you decide to create something different than the default. The d3.timeParse() function defines a parse string that will be used for converting a string into an actual date and the .data(anArray) function is used for reading your data from the anArray variable. The d3.scaleLinear() function creates a linear scale by getting a domain – a range of values – as input and giving a different range as its output. The other scale functions work in a similar way, but what changes is the output range, which is defined using the range() function. Regular expressions help you perform sophisticated searches in a way that it would be difficult or even impossible to do otherwise. Pattern matching is a technique that allows you to search a string for a set of characters based on a specific search pattern that‘s dictated by a regular expression. Internal e-mail I need advice on how to structure and set up a simple internal-only email server for my IoT sensors. I don’t want this server visible to the internet. It might be nice if it could send outbound mail via Gmail, but that’s not a requirement. The main focus is to keep my data internal. All of the articles I find for setting up simple mail servers have linkages to the WAN, which I don’t want, e.g. if I install Postfix how do I make sure it works only via my LAN? We have grown used to distro discs that boot to a live environment that you can try out and then install. This approach was pioneered by PCLinuxOS and popularised by Ubuntu. In that regard, the openSUSE distro on this month’s DVD is very old school as it’s purely an install disc. There’s no live environment, the only way to test it is to install it. While this may seem odd these days, virtualisation makes it easy to install and test a distro without touching your existing system, or you can install in a dual-boot or multi-boot configuration. VNC isn’t the only protocol in town for accessing the remote desktop and you can use a few applications in this Roundup to connect to other protocols besides VNC. However, RealVNC, TightVNC and TigerVNC only support the VNC protocol. Both TigerVNC and TightVNC have a server as well but the latest version of the TightVNC server is only available for Windows and along with the desktop client, the version for Linux is for an older, unmaintained version. There are several other remote desktop clients and solutions that you can use out there. While we’ve only covered the most popular and actively developed VNC clients, there are several others. There’s KDE’s Krdc, TurboVNC, and x11vnc. Also as previously noted, VNC isn’t the only remote desktop protocol in town. Another popular one is the proprietary protocol NoMachine NX. If you aren’t averse to proprietary solutions there’s also the TeamViewer client and Google’s Chrome Remote Desktop tool. One solution that uses remote desktop sharing technology is iTALC. Smart locks can be expensive and can be easier to hack than pick. Some insurers won’t cover homes protected by smart locks, such as the Yale ‘Keyless’ Digital Door Lock (right), unless combined with a mortice lock as they currently don’t have an insurance rating. On the plus side they look very, very cool, so try to follow some best practices if you’re determined to go ahead with using one. Some smart hubs aren’t an integrated physical device, like Samsung’s, but are offered via a website, e.g. Wyliodrin (www.wyliodrin.com) or Prota OS (https://prota.info/prota) which can be installed on the Raspberry Pi. The underlying ethos of digital smart hubs seems to be avoiding the expense of buying an off-the-shelf solution, such as Amazon Echo, but also the trouble of building a system from scratch by connecting multiple Pis. The interface for such hubs is quite intuitive and sometimes may not involve any programming, but the use of flowcharts to determine the behaviour of different devices, such as the Raspberry Pi, Arduino and Samsung Smart Appliances. Mostly ARMless Linus Torvalds made his now famous announcement over 25 years ago, stating that his kernel would be 386 only. The processor is now 31 years old, yet our desktop and laptop computers are still using a backwards-compatible derivative of that architecture. Ansible has a configuration file that it looks for in a number of places. These are, in order of their priority: ansible.cfg in the current directory, followed by ~/.ansible.cfg and finally /etc/ansible/ansible.cfg. These are used to set up how Ansible operates. For instance, you may have a directory that contains all your playbooks and put ansible.cfg in here. Then you can set hostfile = hosts in here to have Ansible look for the hosts file in the current directory too. You then have a self-contained Ansible environment that you can easily back up or set up as a git repos. You can also set up variables for individual hosts or groups. Our menu is awesome but it’s stuck inside a directory and rather cumbersome to use, so let’s add our menu as a command that’s available system wide. First we need to change the permissions of our script so that it is executable. After a successful Drupal 8 installation, you will most likely need to install some modules. First, click the ‘Extend’ option to see the list of all your currently installed modules. Linux distributions (distros) go to great pains to ensure that all the software they offer works well together, so they provide a curated collection called a repository (repo). I see, is that the only reason for doing it this way? What is different about 4.9 is that Linus Torvalds is “pretty sure” that it’s the biggest release ever. He is basing that on the number of commits that have been made. There have been releases with more new lines of code, but they had a small number of very large commits, sometimes due to reorganisation. Ansible is a free (in both senses of the word) and open source system. There is also Ansible Tower, a commercial management system for Ansible. Developed by Red Hat, Ansible Tower provides a graphical interface to Ansible, not only for developing and running playbooks but also for deploying them to other administrators or teams, as well as logging what was done where and by whom. It’s overkill for small networks, especially at the quoted prices, but may be worth considering when administering dozens or even hundreds of servers. Cockpit comprises several different components. The cockpit-ws service launched by Systemd supplies the web server—the ‘ws’ stands for web server. The cockpit-ws service remains in the background, and is automatically activated when Systemd detects Cockpit trying to establish a connection on the default port 9090.
