The Blender Foundation has announced the release of version 4.4 of its free and open source 3D graphics tool. Developers have emphasised stability for this release, which was developed over late 2024 and early 2025, leading them to dub their group effort the Winter of Quality. During this time, over 700 bug fixes have been addressed. Blender also now contains several key updates. Chief among these is a new way to collate multiple data-block animations into a single action using the Slots feature. Although Vulkan support is still experimental, performance has now been considerably improved. Some features are missing, such as OpenXR, OpenSubdiv and Hydra viewport. I’m also a bit concerned. 1) Most of the laptops reviewed so far in LXF that have that architecture use system-on-a-chip processors. 2) Most if not all such chips are made in China. This Arch-based distro follows a rolling-release model. However, the development team has released snapshots of Garuda annually since 2012. The latest version, code-named Broadwing, is available in a variety of spins. These include versions with Garuda’s dr460nized desktop, a custom version of KDE Plasma designed to resemble Mac OS. AMD’s brand new Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT both shipped on 6th March. The AMD RDNA 4 architecture and Radeon RX 9000-series GPUs were partially revealed at CES 2025, except they weren’t part of AMD’s keynote. The debate surrounding Linux coding standards has taken a new turn, after Linus Torvalds openly lambasted an HDR test patch for the Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) subsystem in Linux 6.15. His unhappiness centred on the fact that the code was built as a part of full kernel builds, so leaves behind unwanted files in the include directories that he called “turds”. Torvalds added: “The thing that made me notice that it was still there was that ‘git status’ complains about the stupid turds not being ignored. The name Ubuntu is derived from a Bantu word that roughly translates as ‘humanity towards others’. Since October 2004, this community spirit has been reflected by regular releases of this Debian-based OS. Over the years, Ubuntu has undergone many iterations. Initially, its flagship edition deployed the Gnome 2 desktop environment. This all changed with the advent of Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal in 2011, which heralded Canonical’s own Unity desktop environment, which provided a more modern and touch-friendly interface. In 2017, Canonical abandoned Unity in favour of Gnome.
