During my years working in the tiling industry, I have visited suburbs all over Sydney to offer design advice for pool renovations. Time and time again, I have visited pools with designs that were popular in the ‘70s, ‘80s and early ‘90s, which have failed. Some of the projects I visited left vivid memories of the early stages of the evolving pool tiling industry. When I think of these old pools, I get a mental image of a light-green water colour resulting from a deteriorating lining that covered the interior of the pool and also flowed over the raised coping. This would be broken up with a 50mm x 50mm ceramic mosaic that, by the time I visited, had fallen off the wall onto the floor of the pool. Back…

This coastal site in the Victorian town of Portsea slopes quite rapidly, and the homeowners, who were undertaking a home renovation, wanted their pool to be directly accessible from the deck. As a result, their north-facing fully tiled pool is suspended within a timber deck, which is situated up to 2.4m from the ground.
