People buying new television sets are often advised to spend more on ultra-high-definition (HD) models, for a clearer, sharper picture. But it seems that there are only so many pixels the human eye can detect; and after that, packing in more won’t bring a discernible benefit. As part of a series of experiments, a team of researchers from the University of Cambridge and Meta Reality Labs set up a sliding display, and asked participants to look at one-pixel-wide lines on a screen as it was slowly pulled back. The Castello Cube is a modern art piece made entirely from 24-carat gold. Designed by the German conceptual artist Niclas Castello, it caused some excitement “when it was mysteriously placed in New York’s Central Park for a day in 2022”, says James Warrington in The Daily Telegraph. It has also appeared in Venice and Zürich. Its unveiling was used to promote an accompanying cryptocurrency, dubbed the Castello Coin. Prunella Scales 1932-2025 Prunella Scales, who has died aged 93, was a serious dramatic actress known among other things for being the first person to play a fictionalised Queen Elizabeth II on the British stage, said Michael Coveney in The Guardian. It was considered a bold move when, in 1988, Richard Eyre decided to stage, at the National Theatre, Alan Bennett’s A Question of Attribution, about Anthony Blunt, surveyor of the Queen’s pictures (and a Soviet spy): theatres had shied away from plays featuring a living monarch. Dictionary.com has declared “six-seven” its “word of the year”. Thought to have been coined by rapper Skrilla, the phrase has swept across social media, though it has no meaning. It can be used to express joy or solidarity. One in five working-age people are out of work and not seeking employment, according to a Government-commissioned review by the former John Lewis boss Sir Charlie Mayfield. Employers are losing an estimated £85bn per year in costs such as sick pay, staff turnover and lost productivity. Without intervention, 600,000 more people could leave work on grounds of ill-health by 2030. A “gender gap” for heart health Physical activity guidelines tend not to differ between the sexes – yet it seems that to reap the same benefits to the heart, men may need to do twice as much exercise as women. For a new study, researchers gathered data from activity trackers worn by 80,243 Britons, all of whom were free from coronary heart disease at the start. Analysis of health records showed that, over the next eight years, the women who did at least two-and-a-half hours of moderate to vigorous exercise a week (such as brisk walking or cycling) were 22% less likely to develop heart problems than those who were more sedentary. What happened King Charles cast his brother Andrew out of the monarchy last week by initiating moves to strip him of his titles and evict him from his 30-room mansion in Windsor.
