IN THE MONTH since President Trump made the surprise announcement that he would withdraw U.S. troops from Syria, the policy has slowly disintegrated into a mess. First, the snap decision cost him a Defense Secretary, Jim Mattis, who inspired bipartisan respect and trust. Second, anxious allies like Saudi Arabia and Israel urged the President to rethink a move that might strengthen the regime of Bashar Assad and its backers in Russia and Iran. I WAS PUBLISHER OF THE WASHINGTON Post for 21 years. There were many great days and no question about what was the worst. In 1981, a reporter named Janet Cooke won a Pulitzer Prize for a story about an 8-year-old heroin addict. The afternoon after the Pulitzer announcement, Ben Bradlee, the editor of the Post, received a call from the president of Vassar College. Cooke had claimed on her résumé that she was a Vassar graduate, and we had said so in a release about her Pulitzer Prize. Her claim was false. Live music is a risky business, but 2017’s Fyre Festival was a fiasco even by that standard. Conceived by entrepreneur Billy McFarland and rapper Ja Rule, it was hyped—in a promo video starring scantily clad models—as a luxury retreat in the Bahamas. In reality, the event was a farce: lodgings turned out to be disaster-relief tents, and instead of the promised gourmet fare, attendees received a sad cheese sandwich; its photo went viral. ON JAN. 15, THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT SUFfered its biggest defeat in modern parliamentary history, after lawmakers rejected Prime Minister Theresa May’s flagship Brexit deal by a margin of 230 votes. The deal was intended to smooth Britain’s departure from the E.U. by setting out the terms of the two entities’ post-split relationship. Unless an alternative plan can win the backing of Parliament, the country is on a default path to crash out of the bloc on March 29. That’s if Brexit isn’t delayed or canceled. IN 1969, I MET JAY COCKS. WE became friends. Back then Jay was a movie critic for TIME, and he started inviting me to press screenings. We went to see a picture called Medium Cool, and Jay thought the actress in it was incredible. Her name was Verna Bloom. He asked if I’d go along with him to interview her, so I did. In your new book, You Can’t Go Wrong Doing Right, you describe being a liaison between business and the civil rights movement in the ’60s. How did you persuade executives to come to the table? No businesses can be successful in the kind of environment where people are burning down places. Everybody is a potential customer, and it’s all about the money.
