The FDA recently instructed manufacturers to reduce the recommended dose of zolpidem (found in Ambien, Edluar, and Zolpimist). New research published in the journal Brain and Cognition shows it may increase alertness by as much as 10 percent. “We suspect the act of chewing increases blood flow to the brain,” explains coauthor Yoshiyuki Hirano, Ph.D., a researcher at the National Institute of Radiological Sciences in Japan. New research published in the International Journal of Obesity revealed that dieters who consumed their lunch earlier in the day (before 3 p.m.) dropped 22 pounds in 20 weeks, while those who ate after 3 p.m. lost only 17 pounds. “There are two potential mechanisms that contribute to this,” explains coauthor Frank Scheer, Ph.D., an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. “The first is that you become less glucose-tolerant as the day goes on.
