For doctors and the people they care for, depression can be a vexing condition. It's common--about 16% of American adults will be clinically depressed at some point in their lives--and yet about a third of those cases won't respond to the standard treatments of antidepressants and psychotherapy. Stubborn depression can have dire long-term effects on people's health and well-being: those with treatment-resistant depression tend to die nine years earlier, on average, than those whose mental health is well managed, and they're twice as likely to die after a heart attack. Ask most Americans why they still turn their clocks backward and forward twice a year--as they're set to do on March 12--and they'll likely cite the same reason: farmers said they needed more daylight in the field. This is mostly a myth. While the farm lobby did participate in the policy debate a century ago, they were actually lobbying against daylight saving time--which they said would reduce the time they had in the morning to milk cows and get crops to market. Night Owls get a bad rap, so let's get one thing out of the way: there is nothing wrong with staying up late as long as you're getting a good amount of sleep every night (and not using those extra hours to fuel unhealthy habits). In the first draft of the GOP's replacement bill, two key provisions for women who breast-feed have been left intact, enshrining protections for mothers who want to pump at work. The Affordable Care Act required larger companies to provide time and space for hourly workers to pump milk, and mandated coverage of preventive services like breast pumps and lactation support. One 2010 report estimated that the ACA provisions covered almost 19 million employed women of childbearing age.
